Joshua Tree National Park ? Rain Storm

9/15/2011 Joshua Tree National Park Yesterday’s storm brought good news and bad news. Desert tortoise were happy to find pools of water on park roads that they can drink. (They have the right-of-way so stop and give them space.) And, honeybees were delighted with the cooler temperatures and moisture for their hives. (They can take [...]

  • Licher-Weizen (Light Wheat Beer), a refreshing beer brewed out of wheat and "blessed by the sun"
  • Kostritzer Schwarzbier (Black Beer), a barley malt with a mild-hop flavor.

Sweden building world's largest indoor ski resort

An indoor ski resort in Sweden will be the largest ever built when completeSwedish architects at the firm of CF Moller have unveiled plans for a massive indoor ski resort which, when built, will be the largest in the world. Dubbed Skipark 360°, the new resort would ensure plenty of powder, even in the worst of winters, and could enable year-round fun on the slopes.

Thanks to its main slope, which is 2300 feet in length and has a drop of 515 feet, Skipark 360° will be the only indoor ski resort capable of hosting a World Cup event. That means skiers and snowboarders will have an impressive slope to shred 365 days of the year. The perpetual winter fun doesn't end there however, as the resort will also feature more than two miles of cross country ski tunnels, a biathlon arena, ice hockey rink, and a separate rink for figure skating. Visitors will also find a hotel, spa, multiple restaurants and shops, and even a conference center. In short, everything they need in one self contained environment.

The architects have designed Skipark 360° to be environmentally friendly as well. The resort will get its electricity by a combination of solar, hydro, and wind power, and it will incorporate geothermal heat sources to keep the place warm. The goal is to use 100% renewable energy sources to limit the carbon footprint.

Construction on Skipark 360° is set to commence in 2013 in Balsta, which is located a short drive from Stockholm. It is estimated that the resort will cost about $290 million to complete.

New heat-harvesting material made in $40 microwave oven

Researchers have created an efficient new thermoelectric nanomaterial, that could be used ...

Virtually all electrical devices and industrial processes create heat as they operate, which is typically wasted. In the past several years, various thermoelectric technologies have been developed to address that situation, by converting such heat into electricity. The ideal material for the purpose would be one that has a high electrical conductivity, but a low thermal conductivity – that way, it could carry plenty of electricity without losing efficiency through overheating. Unfortunately, electrical and thermal conductivity usually seem to go hand in hand. With some help from an ordinary microwave oven, however, researchers from New York’s Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have created a nanomaterial that appears to fit the bill... Magic Sauce

I call this magic sauce. In part, because it makes everything it touches shimmer with deliciousness. It's magic like that. Technically, it's a riff on a chimichurri sauce - one that veered off the rails in a big way. Much tweaking has rendered it a distant second cousin. If that. In fact, the hallmark of that sauce, parsley, I skip entirely. But I love this. Love love love. And I use it a hundred different ways.

Magic Sauce Recipe

Let's just start by putting one thing out there. You're best off making a double or triple batch. This is the sort of stuff you burn through in minutes. Not exaggerating. I cook eggs in it - scrambled, omelette, frittata, you name it. I drizzle it on soups. This time of year that means corn soups, brothy bean pots, or lunch time slurpy noodle bowls. I can attest it's the sort of thing that makes baked potatoes even better than usual. And salads welcome it as well - particularly shaved salads, or ones made from spicy greens. You can use it to marinate or slather ingredients before grilling or roasting. And its the sort of dressing that turns a bowl full of farro or quinoa or soba noodles into something close to a full meal - just toss in another favorite seasonal ingredient or two.

Magic Sauce Recipe

It's as versatile as a black dress. Although, it's not really the little black dress of sauces. Think more bohemian that that - earthy, intricate and interesting. Completely approachable. The way the garlic-perfumed oil suspends flecks of rosemary, thyme, and oregano is really nice. And the rusty red tint of the paprika makes everything this sauce touches look just that much more special. If you do anything extra special with it, give a holler in the comments. I still have a half-full mason jar of it ready for business. -h

Oak Park in ND is Voted 'America's Favorite Park'

The votes are in and the people have spoken! Oak Park in Minot, N.D., is the winner of the second annual Coca-Cola America Is Your Park campaign. People cast more than 13 million votes for their favorite parks online and from parks around the country this summer.

In addition to winning the prestigious title of "America's Favorite Park,? Oak Park was awarded a $100,000 recreation grant made possible by the Coca-Cola Live Positively initiative. Second and third-place winners also received grants ? Soudan Underground Mine State Park in Soudan, Minn., and Cunningham Park in Joplin, Mo., received $50,000 and $25,000 grants, respectively.

"America's parks are cherished places where families and friends can enjoy the natural beauty of the outdoors while being active and having fun,? said L. Celeste Bottorff, Vice President, Living Well, Coca-Cola North America. "This year, our friendly competition saw a number of communities come together to rally support for parks affected by natural disasters. We are honored to have been able to play a role in helping local communities give back to their favorite parks through the America Is Your Park campaign.

The competition to find "America's Favorite Park? ignited social media platforms, mobilized entire communities and even caught the attention of celebrities and local dignitaries. For the top three parks, each affected by some form of disaster in recent months, the competition brought additional attention and community support.

"The flood this past summer destroyed Oak Park and, for a large part, the spirit and hope in our community,? said Ron Bieri, President, Minot Park Board. "Thanks to Coca-Cola, the people of Minot are energized and through the grant we will be able to restore the park so families will have a place to play together again.?

Coca-Cola collaborated with the National Park Foundation, America's State Parks and the National Recreation and Park Association to award recreation grants to parks across the country. The grants will be used to restore, rebuild or enhance places for people of all ages to be active outdoors. In addition to millions of online voters, many others came out to local health and wellness events hosted by Coca-Cola in select cities across the country.

About America Is Your Park

For more than 40 years, Coca-Cola has supported America's parks through partnerships with individual parks and national park organizations. The Company has donated more than $14 million for restoration and renovation of our country's parks through programs like America Is Your Park.

In addition to donating $175,000 to the top three winning parks, Coca-Cola also gave $70,000 in grants to national, state and local parks this summer at health and wellness events in select cities across the country. These events featured Women's National Basketball Association FIT Clinics, appearances from local dignitaries and grant presentations. Other parks that made it into the top ten include: Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park (Elizabethton, TN); Jekyll Island State Park (Jekyll Island, GA); McGrath State Beach (Oxnard, CA); Mason Neck State Park (Lorton, VA); Lake Warren State Park (Hampton, SC); Ponca State Park (Ponca, NE); and, Amicalola Falls State Park (Dawsonville, GA).
