ok so i am going off trail. Im beating tthe brushfor a few days. I got
4 maps (2 of which i need, other two are copies)

uh i dont need a pad... pads are for girls on their period. plus its hot outsie so no sleeping bag. headlamp i got a maglight with red lense for reading maps at night. i can go without light. use socks as filters and the chlorine is used for purifying.
ill be going off what i can find and condensed MREs. got around 3000 food calories per day. dont need a stove.. i got fire... oh and the area ill be going into has rivers and is swampy and jungle
btw, i have experiance in beating the brush. not long backpacking trips tho.

few things 1. all i need a red lense for is reading maps at night. and i will be going from point a to b so i need protactors. and gloves is to keep the poison ivy off yoru hands. again I am taking out what i really dont need.
and ive read into the wild. I am going out into thr brush for probably a week... not months. adn if the weather turns to shit, we head for the high ground sit it out or keep going.
condensed mres means you open it up before, take out all the good stuff and take that.
btw, i have done a lot of evolutions and combat evolutions at night so i do know what i am talking about when i say night navigation WITHOUT light. (It is not that hard and I am not planning to do all nighters)
the terrain is hills with occasional swamp, rivers, and lakes. red lense because it doesnt kill night vision when reading maps.
i just dont really see a point of a white light. i mean most of the time, my hooch will be set up before nightfall and i got a fire going. if i choose to hump most of the night, all i need is a red lense to read maps. and ill get different food. just ive been raised on MREs. the taste really doesnt matter. yum cold MREs...
i know military uses gps... i really know... but i would rather use a compass... its 10x easier to use. two reasons why i dont wanna use one. one i cant afford one. two, even if i had one, i wouldnt need it. i got emergency azmuths. we got a road going parallel to our route about 4 miles away. if shit hits the fan, i go there.

I held off writing about this until I was fairly confident it was a sure thing. And now that I'm sitting here amongst towers of boxes, I think it is safe to say...we're moving. Just up the street though! Nothing too dramatic. But yeah, it's a move. And let me tell you, I don't love moving. I've been happy to avoid doing it for seven? eight? years. But the prospect of a proper guest room, a bit more space to work, and extra, extra tall ceilings - all just a hop and skip from where we currently live (and love) - was too much to pass up. So, in addition to wrapping Champagne flutes one by one - and boxing up tights, toothbrushes, and tart pans - cleaning out the freezer was on my hit list. And that's where today's pea soup comes into play.

Pea Soup Recipe

I wish I could tell you I made today's pea soup with fresh spring peas. I didn't. It was made with peas found in the back left-hand corner of my freezer. And, even so, it was good. I'm sure it would be exponentially good with fresh market peas. Here's how it works. You make an Indian-inspired garlic ginger paste, then use it as the base of the soup along with some onion. There's also some green chiles in there to contribute some kick, along with a couple other spices. The ingredient list is based on one from this book, but I went off-road beyond that, and turned it into a one-pot soup.

I'm looking forward to doing some shooting in the new apartment soon - the light there is stunning - although it will be the first time I'll be shooting from a place where I suspect the morning light will trump late afternoon. Fingers crossed.

If you invite my dad to a picnic, barbecue, housewarming, or block party this time of year, odds are good he'll show up with a macaroni salad. He'll wheel it around in a cooler and when the time is right, he'll flip the top and pull a cornflower blue bowl from the ice. The bowl is what I notice first, ceramic with a flower detail on the inside rim, it's part of a set of three my grandma left when she died a few years back. This one is medium-sized, and makes its appearance with plastic wrap across the top, secured with a rubber band. I love those bowls, and I'm extra careful when I wash them.

Macaroni Salad Recipe

I've had my dad's macaroni salad twice in the last ten days, and instead of sharing his version, which is the classic take on it - I was inspired to take a stab at my own version. I ended up making a sauce from lots of sauteed green onions (scallions). Pureed with a bit of pasta water they're creamy without the cream or mayo. Beyond that, I added diced apple, lots of black pepper, arugula, and lemon juice as well. And I stopped there. But I suspect any number of other additions would be good - Marcona almonds, dried apricots in place of the apple, and if you can't be convinced macaroni salad is worth eating without mayo in the mix, a dollop would do the job. An alternative to the mayo would be a bit of salted plain yogurt, or creme fraiche. It works great on day-old macaroni salad, when you need to moisten things up a bit.

The last thing I'll add here is this. You really need to taste and adjust as you toss this salad. I've shared general amounts, but keep adding pepper, or lemon juice, or salt until the flavors really pop off the pasta. It'll happen. Under-season and you end up with a flat-tasting salad. :/

Back in December of last year, Inger Klein Olsen took the helm of Cunard Line's Queen Victoria and joined a small group of women in a male-dominated occupation. Now, P&O Cruises has made history with their first woman cruise ship captain sailing to Australia at the helm of Pacific Pearl. Captain Sarah Breton joins four other female senior officers on P&O Cruises Pacific Pearl along the biggest group of female senior officers on any cruise ship in the region.

"We are thrilled to finally have a female Captain in charge of one of our great Australian ships and believe that Captain Breton is a fantastic role model for girls who dream of a career on the high seas" said Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises.

Captain Breton, 45, has served on board many ships including the former Royal Princess, Sky Princess, Canberra, Pacific Princess, Grand Princess and Star Princess as third officer, second officer, navigator, first officer and safety officer reports northernstar.com. After being promoted to staff captain in 2001 on the original Pacific Princess she went on to serve onboard Coral, Tahitian and now the new Pacific Princess.
